Gig Of The Week: Bill Nelson
WHO: Bill Nelson
WHERE: London Metropolis Studios
WHEN: Saturday, March 26
The latest instalment of the ongoing ITV Legends series sees a welcome, and all too rare, live performance from one of this country’s finest and most individual talents. Bill Nelson’s history stretches back to the start of the 1970s, and while his public profile has dropped in recent years, he still holds a unique position as a true cult hero.
“When I was approached to do this gig, I had to think about a few things. It meant the expense of putting together a band. Also, this is first TV thing I’ve done in years, and there’s the matter of what I play on the night.”
Nelson has been rehearsing with his current band and intends to do a set that’ll appeal to those who want to hear Be-Bop Deluxe classics, but will also have a sprinkling of more left field music.
“I know that everyone will want me to play the obvious stuff, but I will also put in a few more obscure pieces. This is in the hope that it might persuade some people to check out my more recent CDs.”
Nelson also has plans to go back on the road later in the year. Over the past decade or so, he’s only really played live at fan club conventions. But now he’s determined to do shows in the autumn.
There will only be 125 people at this gig, which makes it very intimate. Everyone who goes will get the chance to meet Nelson and have their photo taken with him. They’ll also have their name featured both the credit roll for the TV programme and also on the DVD.
