Gig Of The Week: Big Country
WHO: Big Country
WHERE: Dunfermline Alhambra
WHEN: Sunday, January 2
The return of the iconic rockers will be hugely welcomed by fans across the country. While the band did briefly reform in 2007 – with the core of guitarist Bruce Watson, bassist Tony Butler and drummer Mark Brzezicki – this time around there’s more of a sense that it’ll stick.
“Last time I insisted that I did the vocals,” says Butler. “But for me it was never going further than a few shows. I’m still not convinced that we’ll take it any further now. However, we have Mike Peters (The Alarm) on vocals, and he does a marvellous job, plus Bruce’s son Jamie helping out on guitar, and tickets for this tour have sold so fast, we’re doing more dates around Easter time.”
The band aren’t going to be anal and go for set of obscurities, just to delight a handful of diehards and themselves. It’s the hits all the way.
“We’re gonna give the fans what they want. That’s why they’re keen to see us back, and what’s the point of listening to them, only to ignore the songs they want?”
While Butler refuses to commit to anything further with Big Country, nonetheless he doesn’t rule it out.
“I’m a full-time teacher these days, so anything we do has to be during the holidays. But if these tours go well, then we might look to carry on. But I’d never do it full time.”
Butler s also slightly amused at the unsolicited publicity the band got in 2009, when Virgin Atlantic launched a massive TV advertising to promote their 25th anniversary. In one shot, the cover of the second Big Country album, 1984’s Steeltown, is readily visible.
“I had no clue it was in there. I saw the advert on TV and was amazed to see it. People thought it was a bit of clever marketing by us, but we had nothing to do with it – and certainly made no money as a result.”
