Gig Of The Week: Baroness
WHERE: The Underworld, London
WHEN: Tuesday, January 19
The arrival of Baroness for a UK tour has caused waves of excitement among the prog. metal lovers. The success of last year’s Blue Record has given the Savannah, Georgia band a major boost, making this their biggest tour yet over here.
“We love coming over to Britain,” enthuses guitarist/vocalist John Baizley. “In fact, we’ve made some very close friends across the country, People with whom we keep in touch, When I last went over for a holiday, I ended up staying with some of them. So, this tour means a lot to us,”
The band – Baizley, Peter Adams (guitar/vocals), Summer Welch (bass) and Allen Blickle (drums) – first made their mark in London during 2005, opening for The Capricorns at The Borderline.
“That was one very special night. The atmosphere and the occasion was amazing. Since then, we’ve played a few times at The Underworld, and we love that venue. Baroness always have a great time there.”
The set will inevitably concentrate on the recent album, but they’ll not be forgetting the past.
“What we did on our last American tour was do seven or eight tracks from Blue Record, plus songs that reached all the way back to our earlier release (the 2004 EP just titled First). I guess that’s will happen on this tour. I’ve also got a few covers in mind that we might throw in – they’ll reflect how much of an English influence we have. I shall say no more!”
The band are already plotting a return here in the Summer. But Baizley’s giving little away, in terms of what they’ve got in mind.
“We’d like to do a few of our own headline shows in the early Summer, plus possibly something a lot bigger!”
After London, Baroness head to:
Jan. 20: Manchester Islington Mill
Jan. 21: Glasgow Nice ‘N; Sleazy
Jan. 22: Birmingham Hare And Hound
