Gig Of The Week: Australian Pink Floyd
WHO: Australian Pink Floyd
WHERE: Glasgow Royal Concert House
WHEN: Thursday, March 10
Regarded by many as perhaps the best tribute band in the world, the Australian Pink Floyd are back for another tour, showcasing some of the greatest music of the past 40 years or so.
The band’s line-up these days features Steve Mac (guitar/vocals), Colin Wilson (bass/vocals), Jason Sawford (keyboards), Pay Bonney (drums), David Domminney Fowler (guitar/vocals), Alan McNamara (vocals), Bianca Antoinette Glynn (vocals), Emily Lynn (vocals), Lara Smiles (vocals) and Mike Kidson (saxophone).
But they’ve also brought in one of Hollywood’s most successful and acclaimed visual effects experts to add another dimension – a third dimension. He’s John Attard, who’s worked on the Harry Potter films, as well as Gladiator and many other acclaimed films.
“I am a Pink Floyd fan anyway, so when I was approached to work with this band, it was something I was keen to do,” says Attard.
This is the first time that any band have worked so closely with a 3-D technician, and for Attard is been a experience.
“I was heavily involved in drawing up the ground rules on Hollywood for use of 3-D technology, and the first thing you learn in this sort of situation is to throw away the rules. But given the constraints of time and budget, I believe we’ve come up with something that everyone will love. It certainly fits in with the music.”
Attard feels more and more bands will now get involved in using 3-D technology for live shows, and he’s keen to be involved.
“This is a very exciting, developing area. And once people see what the Australian Pink Floyd are doing, then more and more bands will want to take this up. Live performances are about to change.”
