Gig Of The Week: Argent
WHERE: London Forum
WHEN: Monday, December 13
After 36 years, the original Argent line-up got back together in the summer for the High Voltage Festival. And that proved t be such an enjoyable experience they decided to do a few dates this month, with the climax being this show.
“We had a great time at High Voltage,” says keyboard player/vocalist Rod Argent. “Despite the usual problems you get at festivals, like trying to get a good sound, it was such a pleasure to be back onstage with Russ (Ballard, guitar/vocals), Jim (Rodford, bass) and Bob (Henrit, drums). And we’ve also had a great time doing these dates.”
The band are doing a set which is about 75-80 minutes long, and includes both the expected favourites, plus one or two surprises.
“Well, we have to do Hold Your Head Up and God Gave Rock And Roll To You. But we’re also doing a couple of songs we’ve never done live before: Be Free (from the band’s self-titled, 1970 debut album) and Sweet Mary (from 71’s Ring Of Hands). We also do one of Russ’s songs, Since You Been Gone, and The Zombies’ She’s Not There.”
Supporting will be Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash and Curved Air.
“I think that makes for a good line-up,” says Argent.
As for the future, that remains unclear right now.
“We’ve been offered the chance to do some shows in America, and we are talking about that at the moment. We’re all getting so well that it would be great for Argent to carry on.”
None of the shows on this tour have been filmed or recorded, so don’t expect a live DVD or CD.
“We might look to do it in the future, but only under conditions where we have full control. A live CD came out of our High Voltage set. This was one of those available as soon as the performance is finished.”
