Download update: Sunday
Last bizkit in the tin…
Fred Durst – recovered from the injury that had the band calling off last night’s show in Glasgow – said he was comfortable with the fact that Limp Bizkit will never be accepted into the mainstream. “We’ll always be underdogs. But that’s okay,” he reflected. “That’s the path which is paved for me in life, and I’ve known that since I was a little boy. You keep going and don’t swerve.”
Given a ribbon…
Troy Sanders of Mastodon deadpanned his way through an NME video interview ahead of their second stage performance. The bassist said: “We’ve played Download four times. This is 35th trip overseas as a band in 13 years. That’s impressive – I think we deserve a ribbon. A blue ribbon of some sort. The catering is terrific. The coffee is outstanding. The mud is glorious. I bring two pairs of shoes to prevent festival foot and two pairs of socks per day. I’m flying home to have sex with my wife – I’m fucking horny. I’m always in search of rainbows. It’s a lifelong ambition. Is there a pot of gold? That’s the question.”
Killed it with fire…
It had been suggested that Rammstein might respond to Maiden’s Spitfire with a German warplane – but that wasn’t to be. Instead they seemed determined to wipe out the Earth’s remaining supply of fossil fuels, with pyro after pyro adding energy to a festival-closing set that no one (surely?) could fail to enjoy.
Andy Copping could have told you that in advance. He said: “They’ve never played Download before and I think everyone knows that I’ve been after them for years. I don’t even think you need to like the band to enjoy seeing them live because the show is so spectacular. It’s like nothing you’e ever seen. It’s like Cirque du Soleil on acid – it’s a religious experience… and there’s so much fire.”
@adhaves Rammstein are packing the stage with enough explosives to level the entire county. Should be a low key affair
@BekiHobbs If the zombie apocalypse happens now we’ll just assume it is part of Rammstein’s set
@ChloEchelon Just witnessed a man in a metal pot being hot by a flame thrower. This is the awesome shit that is happening at Rammstein!
@CuffeeTheretual I’m not a Rammstein fan, but their set at #DownloadFest defined the word epic
@AJ_Howarth Rammstein. No idea what he was on about, but probably the best set I’ve ever seen.
@wrightsnake Why does Till Lindemann look like Paul O’Grady?
@JonBonney Time to burn down, errr I mean ‘responsibly pack up’ our campsite.
It’s very gratifying to relax in a cold, dingy cell with your face stuck to Twitter feeds while all that awful loud music and partying goes on elsewhere. We wouldn’t have it any other way – especially when some tweets come along that just change the way you look at the festival. Here are our favourites from many, many hundreds. Download followers are witty folk, there’s no doubt at all.
