David Coverdale Vs. Joe Lynn Turner: It’s War!
He wouldn’t let it lie! David Coverdale has issued a further response to Joe Lynn Turner’s interview remarks about Cov’s supposed ‘miming’ in concert. “Next he’ll be accusing me of wearing a wig on stage,” the Whitesnake frontman quipped.
Coverdale has released a full statement that reads as follows:
I am shocked, very disappointed and surprised by Mr Turner’s misleading and completely untrue observations he felt it necessary to discuss in a recent interview. Whatever his motives, they are disturbing, to say the least.
I do not ‘mime’ in concert. I never have and I never will.
I am David Coverdale. My career spans almost 40 successful years and I have worked with some of the finest musicians in contemporary music and in all that time I have never ‘pretended’ to sing to tapes when I am performing in front of a paying crowd.
I have no idea how anyone who has seen me working live in concert, or is remotely connected to the music business can even suggest such an odious thing.
I have seen the purported video of me supposedly ‘miming’ and all I can say is he and anyone else who believes this nonsense should look more closely.
It is obvious that I am holding the microphone out to the crowd and inviting the audience to participate, as I do during every show, and have done since the beginning of Whitesnake while my background singers keep the songs vocal momentum.
It is hugely important to me that the audience feel completely part of the Whitesnake show and participate with me from the beginning to the end.
They are called the ‘Whitesnake Choir’ for that reason.
Please know, as most sensible people do, that I am especially blessed in this band with two very powerful singers in guitarist Reb Beach and keyboardist Timothy Drury and also two very capable background singers in bassist Uriah Duffy and guitarist Doug Aldrich, and when I am working the crowd, these guys hold the songs for me exceptionally well, as most sensible people can see and hear.
There are no vocal backing tapes… everything you see and hear is being performed live by the musicians and vocalists on stage.
I have no idea why Mr Turner has launched this foolishness, but, I ask that it stop now. It has no merit, serves no purpose &and is a total waste of precious time.
No apology is necessary as I have no desire in any way, shape or form to have any communication with him. He should know better.
Next he’ll be accusing me of wearing a wig on stage.

They love each other really…
The man has spoken.
God bless you D.C.
I have seen Whitesnake a number of times and everytime Mr Coverdale has graced a Glasgow stage he has worked the crowd to the best of his ability – even when playing the souless Armadillo. Worth every penny. Every time. Enjoy your break – but come back soon. The Glasgow Choir is always up for a song!
Does that 40 years include time selling loon-pants?
Tell me; how can someone get such screaming (as he’s not singing anymore) on tape and miming to it??
Oh come on now girls, kiss and make up!
I always thought JLT was the worst singer ever in Rainbow. Says a lot that Blackmore didn’t call him up when he reformed it for a year or so in the ’90s. JLT went through a period of slagging John Sykes because he never got to front Blue Murder.
He joined Deep Purple made an album (not a good one either), toured the world then got booted out. Not that he’s bitter and twisted about! Always harping on about how the second album he did with them was the next big thing (using outside writers???). If it was that great why wasn’t it released, or why didn’t he get together with Blackmore and re-record it under the Rainbow name? He would join the Wombles if he thought that was next big thing.
Coverdale has lost the voice live no matter what anyone says. That’s down to age and smoking. But at least he’s got a history to be proud of, not just a hired gun of a singer. I’m not too impressed by the 21st century version of Whitesnake, but fair play to him for keeping on going. I bet he doesn’t need the money.
I saw D.C. at Manchester last year and I can only say he stopped singing but his voice was still comming out, a very good trick if you can do it!
when is ian gillan and rod evans getting involved in all this?
I´ve witnessed numerous Whitesnake shows over the years as I have Rainbow with JLT on vocals, and DC wiped the floor with JLT vocally! At least that was the case in the 80s & 90s,now…..?
The last two Whitesnake shows I witnessed last year in Copenhagen, almost brought tears of despair to my eyes! David´s lost his powerful voice, and I wish with a heavy heart that he gracefully bow out! I´d like to remember him as one of the best there ever was!
JLT´s just a envious crossdressing primadonna with a huge inferiour complex!
I Believe covernote, Ive heard him sing (screach) a number of times over the years and its all him.
HMMM JLT gets booted out of Deep Purple. The MKIII Reunion rumours & start JLT accusses DC of Miming……. Coincidence ?????
Well done Stevie boy, articulated my thoughts exactly. Slaves and Masters was the lost Rainbow album of the 90s and not a very good one at that. JLT, although he has a set of pipes has never really set the world on fire, a case of being a ‘hired hand’ all the time. Coverdale maybe losing it, the same criticism has faced Ian Gillan in recent times, but what 60+ year old can still do the same as they did when 20? Not many – but their heritage is secure.
NB – The only guy I can think of that still cuts the mustard live and still sends a tingle down the old spine is Roger Daltrey – he can still do the spine tingling scream in Won’t Get Fooled Again, Who Are You? and in the newish Mike Post Theme…………
Any others I may have forgot?
Oh yes – RJD – he can still do it and he must be well over 60

To hear Mr JLT sing is to look att a wall with nothing on it, if you know what I mean.
Beast blues and boggie regards

There’s only one way to sort this out…Harry Hill style………………………..FIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Funny me and my mates thought DC was miming! JLT couldn’t hold a light to Ronnie James DIO in Rainbow, in Deep purple he was a joke. But on the other hand DC was completly out sung by Glenn hughes in DP! DC was allways average he just got a lucky break. and he could never fill Gillans shoes!
He does wear a wig you know! hahaha, silly old duffers
D.C. is greatest singer of all era and JLT is “trash” – sorry
)))))
D.C. is best singer and JLT ? silence
Being a “who” fan for 25 years + i have to disagree with the previous post about roger daltrey,i have heard him do as many bad nights as good ones on the last coupla tours, take the wont get fooled again scream at the acer center in australia this year,it sounded like he was being flushed down the toilet.
And cov has bad nights just the same.
So DC wears a wig then !!!!
JLT SHOULD GO BACK NURSERY AND BACK INTOO HIS PLAYPEN ….. IT`S ABOUT DC GETS A MBE OR A KNIGHTHOOD FOR HIS HARDWORK AND THAT HE REPECTS HIS FANS AND VICE-VERSA
As a lifelong fan of JLT, I have to say that I agree with him to an extent. I saw David Coverdale last July and although he sang for most of the time, there were moments when I really thought there was a tape.
Before that, I heard him in 2005 and he sounded a lot different back then – he was really good and the settign was pretty much the same, and the equipment as well.
If so many people are talking about it, maybe it’s more than just a rumour…
And could you please cut the crap about JLT wearing a wig? Even if he did – so what??? He still sings great and hasn’t lost his voice! And also, if he has lost his original hair, don’t you think he will have a hair implant, instead of a cheap wig?
Blackmore had hair implants since 1977, no shame in that.
i have seen whitesnake several times close up and Cov was not miming then. As for the wig idea Dave, no one think its a wig, just bleached and permed old chap.
I have not viewed the clip in question and hold both singers in high esteem for the range of vocal abilities and the pleasure they have given their avid fans throughout the year. All I can add in Sir Dave’s defence is that I watched him at a mind-blowing concert in 2008 at Villa Contarini near Padova, Italy. It was the last leg of the tour and yes Sir Dave showed signs of being tired but he was nothing less than live and brilliant. AWESOME!!
David Coverdale is brilliant veteran rock vocalist who has stood the test of time his 40 year fuckin’ 40 record speaks for itself with Deep Purple and Whitesnake …Whats Joe Lynn Turner ‘claim to fame’?!!!!
But didn’t DC & Whitesnake win “Best Hard Rock CD” at the Classic Rock” Awards?….His voice is still good in my book!
David Coverdale can’t sing no more as he used to in the 80-ies and 70-ies – that’s a fact, just listen to the last Whitesnake record, and you’ll never need more evidence.
As for live shows – sadly, but it’s even worse, so he have to rely onto the vocal help from his musiicans at times when he can’t handle the vocals – and often use of crowd choir of course.
Take an attentive look while being at Whitesnake show, and you’ll notice that Timothy Drury (keyboard player), Doug Aldrich (Guitarist) & Chris Frazer (Drummer) are always singing 60% of the vocal parts, helping Coverdale to cover up his inability to sing as he used to.
Thats a simple fact, and there is absolutey no shame for a vocalist in his 60ies to admit it, but it seems too much for David Coverdale))
I suppose that JLT is just jealous of David’s career? DC at least still has a decent career these days, where I must say I haven’t heard anything (decently) from JLT since he was in Rainbow. And indeed, I have seen Whitesnake in 2008 on the Arrow Rock Festival in Holland and indeed: when screaming like that it has to be a hell of a tape!
But also, have to agree on Artyom Golev’s comment. The screaming THAT he does, is not much. But leaving much of the singing to your back up vocalists, also shows that it just can’t be a tape. Poor JLT.
maybe it was a dc lookalike miming while the big man went off for a break, nicky clarke hairdresser to the stars perfect decoy.
Why don’t some people ‘get’ irony? Coverdale is talking about Turner’s (alleged) wig. Quite a witty response, but too subtle for some.
Ok, my ironic jest. Let’s hope the guys never meet backstage at that Munich venue…
whitesnake es la mejor banda de heavy metal mundial y CUANDO VIENEN A LA ARGENTINA CHEEEE!!!!
RONNIE JAMES DIO THE ULTIMATE VOICE OF ROCK EVEN T-DAY IN HEAVEN@HELL HE STILL WEARS THE CROWN SO JOE LYNN AND MR COVERBOOK PLEASE PUT A SCOTTISH SOCK IN IT
yes d c maybe last year he lost the voice, 2 years a go was still good..but mr. coverdal is still the best rock singer n the world, hope to see him again
hahahahahahahaha! JLT you freeeeeeeeak come back when you have crawled from under which ever rock you choose to live under and have licked the mighty boots filled by Sir David Coverdale clean as you will NEVER fill em! LOVE YA DAVID XXXXX
It is true that my favorite singer, David Coverdale, is not as good in live shows as he used to be. Often he seems very tired and exhausted to even keep on standing and jumping around on stage let alone singing! Well, he is 57-years old this year, and he is not young. However, better or worse, he is still singing with his voice without any recorded help. His background vocalists do a great job and I still think GOOD TO BE BAD is a good album. If you can make an album this good in your sixties, honey, you have a long way to go and can have a few sessions professionally.
All the way from Tokyo Japan, I encourage and send my deepest love to David Coverdale so that he continues his endeavers!
Come back to Tokyo again!!!!
The man has lost his voice. I have seen two gigs this year and he shrieked and screamed his way through them supported by one hell of a lot of reverb.
The answer is to ‘go blues’ again. There is a wonderful back catalogue there that is neglected in favour of the new album which is just awful in comparison.
Newty, you are right about how and where he should go from here. His blues and ballads are very good and the man can sing anyways. Slow blues and acapella/unplugged ballads are great with his nice baritones like he did well at Starker’s Tokyo.
However, the man also rocks. He can rock for ever if he would like to.
He is in sixties and he is still rocking on. It is amazing. Compared to all the sixties who are singing still, MR. DC fares better.
has anyone seen the new twix advert, DC is looking good and his miming was spot on for a change
Miming? Perhaps not. Post-production overdubbing? Most probably. Digital pitch correction? Absolutely!
… but really, JLT and Coverdale are both on the B-list of Purple alumni.
I’ve heard JLT live multiple times the past few years and his voice is great. You can’t dislike the things he has done, but he is definitely a great singer, no matter what.
I can’t see why he would gain some “fame” by saying this. What makes you think that? Maybe he isn’t as famous as DC; he still has a lot of fans and he knows that. When I read these comments (about DC not singing and still hearing his voice!!!), I can only say that maybe JLT was just honest. Though I do not agree about the fact that he tells about it in an interview… He should have kept it for himself or talked about it with DC.
And about the wig: guys, even if he wears a wig? What does it matter? It’s about the voice, songs and performance, right?
I have very little knowledge of JLT’s career above and beyond Rainbow. He is a decent singer, who has been delegated to being a third place backup in most cases. DC is an icon of hard rock. As someone else had mentioned, it makes very little sense for JLT to make these accusations other then out of pure jealousy. I’ve seen Whitesnake in recent years, and I can assure you, DC is not miming… He struggles and screeches at times, but gives his all to his fans. I don’t think “miming” equals into his equation.
On another note, no one mentioned “Paul Rodgers”, whose voice seems to have gotten even better over the years…
