CR AWARDS: Deep Purple
The two Ians – Gillan and Paice – interviewed by Sir Dave Of Ling at the Classic Rock Roll Of Honour. Oh, and Roger Glover too…
The Innovator Award (sponsored by Rimowa)
Winner: Deep Purple
Are you having a smashing time, gents? Who are you sitting or drinking with?
Ian Gillan (vocals): Yeah, very much thanks. Everything’s wonderful. I’m going to have a drink with my missus; I haven’t seen her for ages and she’s come up to London especially for this.
Roger Glover (bass): Are you offering us a drink? Thank you very much. I’ll have a large one. You are very nice man.
How do you feel about winning the Innovators award?
Ian Paice (drums): It’s nice to get any award. It means that you’re still functioning; people are still taking notice of you and liking what you are doing. And, like anything in life, that’s a great return.
Ian P, as its sole original member you’ve been in this band for 43 years. Does that even seem possible?
Glover (grinning): It makes him older than Christ.
Paice: On one level that’s a very frightening number but on another it’s extremely gratifying. It means that something that you did in your youth has turned into a career of something that brings you satisfaction. It’s been a good life, I can tell you that.
What about the title of Innovator? Is that something that sits comfortably?
Paice: Well, like I said in the speech it’s a big word for a band that began as a bunch of kids that did things they only way they knew. What people think of it afterwards is beyond our control. If they turn around and say you’re an innovator, all you can reply is: ‘Okay, thanks’. What I’m trying to say is that you don’t aim for such accolades, but if people want to throw them at you then that’s a great thing.
