CR AWARDS: Townshend Wants To Tour Quadrophenia
The CR awards winner on the new reissue, ‘non-vinyl pussies’ and why he’s waiting for Roger…
The Who’s Quadrophenia album won the Classic Album award at the CR Roll of Honour last night. We spoke to Pete Townshend about the album’s deluxe reissue and his plans to get The Who back together.
Q: What brought this new box set on?
Townshend: “Universal records brought it on. They’re hoping we might sell enough to give them enough time to fall over another Adele. I was a little slow to rise to the idea at first, but as I started to look at what I had in my archives I got excited about working on Quadrophenia again, and really enjoyed doing the liner notes and restoring and mixing the demos. If you’re serious, the version to look out for is the heavy-vinyl release coming next year. This is remastered, and sounds mind-fucking. It’s not included in the new package because after the release of Live at Leeds and Live at Hull last year, so many non-vinyl pussies complained: ‘Why do I have to pay for vinyl when I don’t have a deck?’ You got the vinyl FREE you twat! Get me and Roger to autograph it and it’ll be worth £150 on eBay.”
Q: Are you still planning to take Quadrophenia out on the road with The Who next year?
Townshend: “I’m waiting for word from Roger on this. I’ve been ready to tour this since we did it last year at the Royal Albert Hall. Roger has been developing his own new band, and it’s proving to be a real epiphany for him. I am patient. As soon as he’s fed up being the boss he can come and work with tricky old me again in the old school band.”
