Could Billy Idol Be Aerosmith’s King Rocker?
Following Classic Rock’s exclusive story that Paul Rodgers was asked by guitarist Joe Perry to be Aerosmith’s new singer, we can reveal the name of another star sounded out by Perry to fill Steven Tyler’s shoes: Billy Idol.
A source tells us:
“Joe had been approaching a few people about replacing Steven and he invited Billy to his show at the House Of Blues in Los Angeles.
“Joe said he wanted to talk to Billy about joining Aerosmith, because the band were having problems with Steven.”
The gig – which featured the Joe Perry Project – took place on November 24 in West Hollywood. It was reviewed in the December 2009 edition of Classic Rock (issue No.139).
However, in a strange turn of events, Idol failed to respond to Perry’s invitation.
“As far as I know Idol did not show up due to having a cold,” says our source.
Whether this means the door remains open for Idol to try out for the Aerosmith job at a future date is unclear.
Besides Paul Rodgers and Billy Idol, Classic Rock knows the name of a third high-profile singer who has been asked to replace Tyler.

Pump was a good album too. They cant replace Tyler really, it would never be the same…Paul Rogers replaced Freddie in Queen and they were just another pub rock band. They should sort it out with Tyler or split.

this is getting so stupid. why not ask alice cooper, ozzy, robert plant, dio, udo, johnny rotten, david johansen, mick jagger, david vanian, alex mitchell etc etc etc… Aerosmith need to throw the towel in.. joe just work on your project and if you want that to be any good get ralph mormon back as the singer. Steven tyler cannot be replaced.. Call it a day. you haven;t made a good lp since done with mirrors…

This is an iffy one. Not quite like replacing Mick in the Stones. Kind of like VH without Diamond Dave. That is, if they go in a different direction they might have something. However, replacing Whitford and Perry in the past didn’t work too well did it? Perhaps a permanent vacation?

There’s only one guy I know of that comes anywhere close to Steven Tyler, and that’s the guy who fronts the tribute band ‘Toxic Twins’. He actually blew me away with his voice and stage persona – an uncanny resemblance. BUT, as others have said, there is only one Mr Tyler, he cannot be replaced, so the band should either sort themselves out or give it up. Aerosmith without Tyler would (in my mind) be like AC/DC without Angus – f**king pointless!
I think they need to put one last album out and shock us all before they hang it up.. and really hang it up cause Aerosmith aint Aerosmith without ALL members of the band on board…
And yes they have had good albums you jerks.. remember the come back with “NINE LIVES” that was amazing work and back on columbia records where they should be… besides they came back at least twice with AWE and i think they could again… just not another “push play” i wanna a rock album maybe only 1 ballad this times boys….
