Classic Rock Presents...Prog: Prog Blog 07/4

Classic Rock Presents…Prog editor Jerry Ewing addresses some of the problems you might have been having in getting your mitts on a copy of the magazine.

So here we are once more…

It’s been a morning of enjoying listening to the new Mars Volta CD in the Classic Rock presents Prog office – you’re gonna love it, trust us – as well as some golden oldies from Rush and Mostly Autumn and some corking new albums from up and coming youngsters Sine Star Project and Crippled Black Phoenix, who you can read about in issue 2, which we are lovingly creating as I type.

However, there seems to be a more serious issue to address, judging by the number of posts on the Classic Rock website. Of the magazine’s price, all I can say is we are governed by the fact that as we are a specialist quarterly title (for this year at least), we are affected by trade costs incurred by the irregular nature of when we appear and newly increased PRS costs for the CD.

However, more importantly seems to be the fact that some of you can’t find the magazine on the shelves. Well trust us, it is out there and it is selling well. That in itself may be one reason. Another is that, again, owing to our quarterly status, we can’t get into the big supermarkets. You will find the magazine, when not sold out, in WH Smiths, HMV and some smaller retailers. However, as we are a specialist title, we have a much smaller print run than Classic Rock itself, so simply cannot be in every retail outlet that they appear in.

It is also apparent that one or two retailers have failed to grasp the concept of the magazine, what it is and have told readers they don’t stock it or can’t order it, both of which are untrue. This has already been addressed by Future with the news trade. But remember if asking in a newsagents, to ask for Classic Rock presents Prog magazine.

If you’re overseas, then in America, Classic Rock presents Prog will be available from Borders outlets or from www.imsnews.com/clr. We’re afraid it has completely sold out at www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk.

Still this all points to the fact that issue one has sold well, so a huge thank you to those of you who have purchased a copy.

Don’t forget that you can listen to the magazine’s first Progcast, featuring myself, and writers Tommy Udo, Nick Shilton and Malcolm Dome here.

And coming up at the end of this week, part two of the original Pink Floyd interview that inspired the Rick Wright feature in the current issue of Classic Rock presents Prog. You can read the Roger Waters segment of that original 1999 interview here. The David Gilmour section will feature in Thursday’s Prog Blog.

‘Til then, adieu.

Contrary to what is stated here, “Classic Rock Presents Prog” is not available at Borders outlets, Borders’ online, nor is it available at imsnews.com. Apparently, even many people in the U.K. have been unable to locate a copy. So what, exactly, is the point of what you do? It can’t be to expose more people to prog, because if that were the point, you’d print plenty of copies for those interested in purchasing one. If the real purpose is to create a limited run of artificially-created “collectibles,” then why not just print a couple hundred and put them straight onto ebay.com? Or is that in fact what you did? This business of announcing a magazine that no one can actually buy is a crock, and rest assured it will not result in more subscriptions to your regular “Classic Rock” magazine, not over here.
Thanks a lot.
Really.

Ugh… first comment apparently not taken.

Listen, your company is called “Future”, so get into it with digital distribution of the magazine through Zmags or Zinio.

IMS does not offer this magazine here in the states, just a regular subscription to CR. I’m not sure why you keep giving us that URL.

It’s official… IMS News does not carry special issues including the Prog issue. I just talked to them on the phone. Thanks for the wild goose-chase.

So I’ll say it again… please make this available digitally. It seems a rather pointless exercise to go to all the work to create a magazine like this and then not even be able to maximize your investment in it by not making it available to everyone who wants it when it’s easily possible with digital distribution.

C’mon… we’re wanting to give you our money, but you’re making it really difficult.
