Celebrated and influential punk poet Jim Carroll has died at the age of 60.
He died from a heart attack at his home in Manhattan. Carroll’s biggest impact came with his 1978 autobiographical tale The Basketball Diaries. This was based on his time at elite school Trinity, which was funded through a basketball scholarship. In 1995 it was turned into an acclaimed movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
In his time, Carroll worked with a variety of talents. These included Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, Blue Öyster Cult and Pearl Jam. And his 1980 album, Catholic Boy, is regarded as a classic.
Talking of Carroll’s inspiration, Patti Smith has said:
“I met him in 1970, and already he was pretty much universally recognized as the best poet of his generation, The work was sophisticated and elegant. He had beauty.”
