Bruce Dickinson Radio Show To Be Axed

In what many will regard as a direct attack on the rock and metal community, digital radio station 6 Music is to axe the Friday Night Rock Show, which is presented by Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson.

A spokesperson for the BBC, attempting to explain the shock decision, said:

“6 Music is currently reviewing the way it reflects the rock and heavy metal genres across the network and has decided to decommission the Friday Night Rock Show. The network, however, remains committed to reflecting both genres throughout the schedule as part of its core music offering. We would very much like to thank Bruce Dickinson for the hard work and commitment he has shown to 6 Music over the past eight years.”

Dickinson has presented the three-hour show since 6 Music was launched in 2002.

Elisabeth Mahoney, writing an article for The Guardian, commented:” I’d not listened to Bruce Dickinson for a while, as the music he plays isn’t my thing. But if it is your thing, there is no other UK show quite like it: presented by a legend and, in spirit, just like the music he plays.”

Nobody directly connected to the show would comment on the decision. But the enormous show of support for Dickinson and what he plays on air suggests the rock community are far from convimced that 6 Music have the best interests of the genre at heart.

Right now, it appears that there’s a chance Dickinson’s show will switch to Planet Rock. In the meantime, you can still catch the show on 6 Music on Fridays from 9pm to midnight – for the time being at least.

Typical BBC. The only outlet they will provide now is for those who can stay awake until 2am to listen to the Radio 1 Rock show! I think Bruce and Planet Rock are an excellent fit. \m/

It seems the BBC doesn’t care at all for rock and metal. Just whiny indie music – it’s gonna be a shame if 6 Music looses Bruce as they’ll lose listeners too I’d imagine. Lets hope that Planet Rock manage to sign him up – it’d be a fantastic addition for an already fantastic station!

Mr Speed

Why is it a direct attack on rock and metal?

The BBC are axing the whole channel not just Bruce’s show.
It’s a DAB show too so I’m guessing it’s limited ion listeners and there’s Planet Rock & Rock Radio available, so apart from being sensationalistic journalisom I can’t see why it’s a direct attack on Rock & Metal?

Anyone?

Those bastards!

On a different note, it’s about bloody time that Bruce locks up his lazy arse in a studio and make a new personal album.

BBC have never given a lot of time to classic rock music and its no surprise that they will be dropping Bruce’s show completely. Make the painless move to Planetrock Bruce and screw the Beeb!

I’m disgusted about this. They are axeing the whole of 6 Music when they could have axed the pointless ‘look how charitable I am’ Sport Relief farrago which just exists to give celebrities exposure for publicity stunts (e.g. chrisitine Bleakley’s waterski-ing).

I give up, I’ve tried to understand what the BBC’s remit is, it is either a) Broadcast programs that the commercial station cannot; i.e. not enough revenue to cover the production costs but still serves the public, niche programming, genre based shows…etc. Or b) Program directly against the commercial stations; i.e. To gain audience, offer cheapest programming for most audience figures.

If it’s a) Then keep Six Music, the Asian network and loose Radio 1 or 2 as the commercial stations can offer that sort of programming just as well as the BBC.

If it’s b) Then be honest about it and stop lieing to the public, plus, if this is the case, then the licence fee has to come under question and they don’t want to have this debate.
