Andy Hummel, who was a founding member of cult 1970s band Big Star, has died at the age of 59.
The bassist had suffered from cancer for the past two years. He’s the second member of Big Star to pass away this year. Vocalist Alex Chilton had a heart attack in March.
Drummer Jody Stephens, the sole remaining member of the original band (guitarist Chris Bell died in 1978) said of Hummel:
“He was such an inspiration. I’d known Andy since the 7th grade. What an impact he had on my life. He will be sorely missed”.
