Battle Of The Bands: The Black Lights Vs Lionsex
Ding-ding! Seconds out! Welcome to round three of our new war of the great unsigned!
And yes, we’re running this bout on Thursday this week, simply because it’s Easter weekend.
The idea is simple: we’ll give you access to two unsigned bands. Download their songs and then vote for the band you like the most. The following Friday we’ll count the votes – and the winner will get a spot on a forthcoming Classic Rock magazine CD, taking their music to 70,000 rock fans.
Round Two was won by the fantastic Swanee River – watch out for a track from them on a forthcoming CR CD.
So without further ado, here’s this week’s contenders:
The Black Lights
In their own words, The Black Lights are “a collective of five (more or less) grown men who hail from the hills and dales of Central Scotland”. The band formed in 2006 after the quintet were fed up of hippity hop beats and whiny bubblegum pop that they kept hearing on the radio.
As an antidote, their brand of raunch’n’rawk has “steel-lunged vocals spitting out melodies that cling to your conscience with a VD-like enthusiasm”, and a live show that reminds you “just why sweat-soaked venues are an infinitely preferable proposition to listening at home with the volume barely nudging 4”.

Deep, deep in the concrete jungle that is Milton Keynez (their spelling!) something is stirring… From the four corners of Britain’s newest city come Britain’s newest rock’n’rollers… Lionsex.
With influences that range from Guns N’ Roses to the Sex Pistols by way of Mötley Crüe and Pearl Jam with a vibrant modern edge, these boys boast a lean n’ mean rhythm section, a twin guitar attack and the smokey growl of Mr Jef Leppard (yes, you read that name right). Quickly building a strong reputation for themselves, the boys have so far recorded three sets of demos and played a string of unforgettable shows taking their balls-out-rock’n’roll across the city and beyond.

Lionsex are a bit crap. I saw one show in a shitty little pub in MK. I must say I didnt think much of them. Considering who thier “influences” are I would have expected much more! They obviously care too much about the image and not about the soul of the true original rock music.

LIONSEX all the way – best rock n roll band around none of this borin middle of the road shite such as the other band here. If you think they’re all about image then you probably just don’t have any yourself and bands that look THAT good make you all jealous. Go LIONSEX…

your song sounds really nice. It likes to me… Maybe the Lionsex’s one has poor quality, but all we know that’s not the important thing here, right? That’s only money…

i think lionsex are a cool band they rock. I love there style there looks. and as goes for the sound of the music its bloody fantastic. I hope to see this band in the future on the big stage rocking out.

I like some of both bands songs. Love the mellow song on Lionsex’s myspace page but man the singer and one of the other dudes look like proper scag heads! Go easy on the K and crack boys but keep making tunes.
