BATTLE OF THE BANDS: Magic Ship Vs Fare Evaders
Ding-ding! Seconds out! Welcome to round five of our new war of the great unsigned!
The idea is simple: we’ll give you access to two unsigned bands. Download their songs and then vote for the band you like the most. The following Friday we’ll count the votes – and the winner will get a spot on a forthcoming Classic Rock magazine CD, taking their music to 70,000 rock fans.
Round Four was won by the young Hippys On The Hill – watch out for a track from them on a forthcoming CR CD.
So without further ado, here’s this week’s contenders:
Magic Ship
Magic Ship are a quartet who set sail from London, who, according to their bio “shake their rocks off to bring giant guitar-shaped soundscapes of two-fisted classic rock with catchy pop toppings and tunes that leave a flaming trail of bourbon, diesel and desert dust in their wake”.
So now you know! But the question is – are they tough enough to win this week’s bout?
If you’re looking for something quintessentially classic rock with a twist of retro Americana with an English accent, check out the title track of Magic Ship’s debut album LoveTel Motel without delay.
Will you get on board the Magic Ship, or will you stay on the dock? YOU decide.

Fare Evaders
Giving the Magic Ship a run for their money are Liverpool’s Fare Evaders. They only formed recently (after the band members’ previous groups fell apart), but ever since Daniel Badger, Niall Blanchflower, Ben Davies and Dean Caffery got together they’ve been tearing the Merseyside music scene apart with their powerful vocals, loud guitars and groundshaking drumbeats.
So, can the Fare Evaders manage to outrock their opponents and win this battle? YOU decide.
Download their track You Know You’re Wrong and place your vote.

Fare Evaders are AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Magic Ship all the way! Hardest rockin’ boys sarf of the river!
Look what you could have won. That’s right its a Magic Ship and two nights in LoveTel Motel. Smashing!
Magic Ship put the “classic” in Classic Rock. The Fare Evaders need to do a battle of the bands contest in NME with The Fartic Monkeys.
Having listened to both tracks, I feel that Magic Ship have won this hands down.
Magic ship are awful how can you say that they’re better than Fare Evaders !
If Fare Evaders dont win this it will be an injustice !
Fare Evaders all the way !
I do agree that Fare Evaders would be more suited to NME or something like that, but i think they are a very talented band.
Magic ship just don’t quite cut it for me. They arn’t a bad band. They just haven’t got that edge to them.
I really feel Fare Evaders should win though. As I say, just my opinion.
I like both of these bands so this is going to take some thought because each band has its own distict style and sound.
Fare Evaders are also using their MySpace page for their song download link which means you get to listen to more of their songs whereas Magic Ship have just the one song linked to theirs.
So it really is a battle of the bands, which means I shall be giving the Magic Ship MySpace a quick shuftie to check out their other stuff before I cast my vote.
The Ship is Magic!! Yay!
Ahoy magic ship mates you’re getting my vote
Any plans to play Southend…
I’m going with the Ship on this one. A much more polished sound. The high hat in the Fare Evaders song was quite simply annoying.
Magic Ship cos they’ve got a sense of humour.
Magic ship is the way to go without a doubt
Magic Ship have won no doubt.
Ive seen Fare Evaders live and they are one of the best live bands I have ever seen. They get my vote
Magicship sound a very tight band – gets my vote.
Magic Ship remind me of a cross between The Rolling stones and the legendary New Wave Australian band – The Saints from the late 70s.I am keeping this track for my MP3 well worth listening to again.
They have a good basic rock sound but are trying too hard to appeal to the American market.
Fare Evaders are very Indie and not original in any shape or form.Ive been listening to this replicated stuff for the last 4 years whilst flicking TV channels betwwen NME/Scuzz/Kerrang its time for the rock scene to move on. guys.Last weeks Hippys on the Hill are also from merseyside and they are a breath of fresh air, they dont fit into any genre and all the better for it.
Ive played both tracks several times and the Fare evaders track is starting to bug me (Very repetitive riffs and vocals) So its a vote for Magic Ship….cheers
Magic Ship for me but Fare Evaders is a better name.
FARE EVADERS SHOULD WIN.
They work dead hard an everything! They’re amazing lads and deserve this
Love all four of the gimps ;D
Magic Ship have a good feel
Magic ship to win… saw this great bad in my local in Putney – they rock (and the drummer is cute!)
Really like Magic ship – good old fashioned rockers – they get my vote!
I don’t understand how people think Magic ship are better. They are really just a boring band, They are just average, nothing to them really.
And then look at Fare Evaders. A young band with loads of energy, and 2 really good songs on their Myspace page. I really think they have a bright future ahead of them. They get my vote, and i think you should give them a real listen to their songs, The riff in you know you’re wrong is brilliant, I wish them the best of success !
Fare Evaders has to take this for me . A lot of people in these comments, talking about magic ship are to scared to give a young band a chance. Look at Magic ship. They’re alright, but really are nothing special. I just think people here are scared to branch out and listen to younger music. And i really think people should Give Fare Evaders their vote. A bright young band.
Magic Ship are a group of washed up “wanna be’s” .
Fare Evaders arre a bright new band. Decisions easy really isn’t it ?
Magic Ship for me
Lets not forget, Fare Evaders have only been together for a matter of months and are just breaking into the music scene, and if this is the quality of the music they are producing this early in their career, I can’t wait to hear the rest of their stuff. They are only 17 year old lads, and are taking on a band who have got years of experience on them, and already Fare Evaders are making a big impact around Liverpool.
I think they have a great future ahead of them !
My vote goes to magic ship. Saw this great band in my local in putney in Jan – they are great live – great drummer who is also cute…….
Magic Ship all the way – fab band and excellent musicianship – v tight!!
Magic Ship for me.
I’m a Classic Rock fan. They sound like they’re having fun and have a good rocking sound.
I’m sure the Fare Evaders are nice boys with nice haircuts but they sound very run of the mill indie/NME to me.
fare evaders definitely deserve to win. great band, great tunes, what more can you ask for.
I hate indie crap. After all, this is Classic Rock. However. In this instance, i’m going with my gut instinct and would like to see the Fare Evaders win. Magic Ship lack originality. I saw a comment about the Rolling Stones. We had one, why have another.
I never thought i’d say it but i hope the Fare Evaders take this one home. Dom
“So Daniel, tell us who you are going to be tonight?……..”
“Tonight Jeremy, we’re going to be….The Arctic Monkeys.”
Give me a break.
Fare Evaders? Sounds like typical scousers.
Magic Ship all the way for me, the drugs at their concerts a way better
MAGIC SHIP ROCKED MY BOAT ALL THE WAY
Magic ship for me too. A great band.
Magic Ship for me aswell. Not only are they a great bunch of guys but also good musicians.
I don’t understand for one moment how anybody can say that Fare Evaders lack originality and that Magic ship don’t ?
Im not saying Fare Evaders are original, However i do think they are a bit different to a lot of the bands around now. But surely to God you can’t think that Magic ship are that good, can you ? I mean fairly average run of the mill songs. Nothing too them. A bunch of older men playing generally quite boring songs.
Or an energetic fresh young band nocking out really good songs. I think the best of them is yet to come aswell. It says in a comment that they are only 17 ! This is really good music for 17 year old boys, they’re still kids !
And as for the person who cracked the joke about Fare Evaders. Sounds like scousers to me. then goes on to talk about taking drugs at a Magic ship gig. Im not from Liverpool and im not sticking up for scousers, but surely taking drugs is worse than not paying for a ticket ?
I just think the comment about people on here being to scared to give a young band a chance is totally true. Theres only one band in this for me. And its got to be Fare Evaders.
Glad i stumbled across this battle. Just listened to both bands. And so glad i found Fare Evaders, Im keeping my eye on them, such a good young band.
Hope they win !
ps. The Magic ship song sounds like a bad version of the song off School of Rock !
Unquestionably Magic Ship…!
Col’ who’da guessed you guys would sound that good !!
Battle is over. Good luck to both.
Like Magic Ship. Good old school rock.
Fare Evaders good too. But more indie band.
No need to be not nice about older band just because of ages young peoples. Listen with ears not with eyes.
Thanks to everyone that voted for us and our best wishes go to the lads in Fare Evaders.
