BATTLE OF THE BANDS: Hippys On The Hill Vs Serpico
Ding-ding! Seconds out! Welcome to round four of our new war of the great unsigned! Check out our previous Battle Of The Bands!
The idea is simple: we’ll give you access to two unsigned bands. Download their songs and then vote for the band you like the most. The following Friday we’ll count the votes – and the winner will get a spot on a forthcoming Classic Rock magazine CD, taking their music to 70,000 rock fans.
Round Three was won by the fabulous The Black Lights – watch out for a track from them on a forthcoming CR CD. Check out The Black Lights’ winning track here!
So without further ado, here’s this week’s contenders:
Hippys On The Hill
One listen to Hippys On The Hill and you’ll probably be astounded to learn that the average age of this quartet is a mere 16 years old. But despite their tender age, this bunch are veterans of Battle Of The Bands competitions in their local area (that’s Wallasey in the Wirrall).
Brought together by a love of music, frontman/guitarist Brad Done explains: “It started off as an indie band then it became more punky, then we finally got to the style we have now.
“We don’t say we’re going to write a punk or a rock song, we just start jamming and then it evolves from there.”
See what you make of their fiery brand of alternative, high-voltage rock’n’roll by checking out their song We’re All Insane By The End Of The Night. Are these Hippys tough enough to win this fight? YOU decide.

Serpico
Our sister mag Metal Hammer described Scottish quintet Serpico as being “A snotty teenage HIM, or a Scottish accented Misfits or Layne Staley singing Funeral for a Friend at a karaoke party”. That, and that their songs are “Massive slabs of punk-infused three chord wondrousness.”
They self-released their debut EP in 2007 and since then have kept themselves out of trouble by hitting the road and staying there. To date, they have toured with Stone Gods, Wednesday 13, Paradise Lost (among many others), and even crossed the whole of Europe in support of Black Stone Cherry.
So, can Serpico blow the whistle on their opponents and win this battle? YOU decide.
Download Serpico’s track Last Honest Cops’ and place your vote.
To vote for Serpico, send an email entitled ‘Serpico’ to classicrock@futurenet.co.uk

So, for the second week in a row, it’s Scotland versus England. Who will throw the knockout punch? Will it be a rerun of the Battle Of Culloden? Or will the Scots rise up and kick England’s arse in a recreation of the Battle Of Bannockburn? It’s all down to you! Who do YOU prefer? Vote now and add your comments below! Voting closes Thursday 23 April, result revealed next week. One vote per person, multiple votes from the same email address will not be counted.
(If you’d like your band to be considered for Battle of the Bands, send CDs to Scott Rowley, Classic Rock, 2 Balcombe St, London NW1 6NW.)

Unbelievable & original sound from the baby faced assasin rockers Hippys on the Hill.
If they can play like this at 16 what will they be doing in 2 years time ?
This track has gone straight onto my MP3
Can anyone classify them into a genre ?
Theyre heavy rock/indie/punk/power pop to me.
Serpico – good track – good for a pogo but not original enough for my liking.
i vot for serpico lol
Serpico rock!! They’re the best band no one’s ever heard of, they work so hard they deserve to be on the cd
xxx
Hippys on the Hill
At last some original music! Of course it’s going to be young bands like Hippys on the Hill who come up with fresh ideas and material.Their music is so mature it’s hard to believe they’re only sixteen. Would love to see ‘em live. I’ll look on their myspace for gigs and tell people to give them a listen. This is definitely a band to watch out for!
Serpico – a decent track but I’ve heard plenty of similar stuff.
How can you have heavy rock and pop power in one band?
To listeners originality doesn’t matter anymore. Serpico have toured with some amazing bands and that definately reflects the sheer potential they have.
This is a great track. Merseyside keeps turning out talented bands and it looks like they’ve done it again with Hippys on the Hill. Looking forward to hearing more from them.
ehm, i duno if there was a place where i was to vote but because im stupid im just going to leave a comment lol
I VOTE SERPICO!!!
wooopah!
LoveYouMikey!

Hippys on The Hill are the best new band Ive seen in many a long year. Theyre not good for their age, theyre just damn good! & they have many songs better than this one! Big future awaits The Hippys
I’ve seen Hippys gigging around Liverpool and not only are they excellent musicians who really put on a show, they are great guys as well. If yu get the chance to see them live, make it a must! Good luck with the competition lads!
Anything else out there by these guys Hippys? Do I hear the second coming of the NWOBHM? Love to hear this new stuff coming through. Respect guys.
This band are AWESOME live! So much energy and professionalism on stage! Miss a gig and you’re seriously missing out. Killer riffs combined with breathtaking drumming, spot-on rhythm and a jaw-dropping bass make this band the best new band for yonks! Yeah – yonks! Rock On guys!
Hippys gonna be MASSIVE!
Hippy’s.
I’ve seen Serpico live and they didn’t make much of an impression, except a kind of false enthusiasm I couldn’t subscribe to.
Hippys FTW
XXX
SERPICO all the way baby!!!!!!
I know nothing of these bands.
as many hear agree:
orginality is everything.
Serpico toured with the stone gods?
They might aswell be them.
Gotta hand it to them hands down great music.

Hippys offer that full rock sound and raw talent!
with a dump of originality and enthusiasm that even comes through on a download.

Hippys are an awesome, energetic, youthful and original band, who always deliver at their gigs! Their on stage show backs up 100% their amazing rocking music! great lads, great sound, great future! Good Luck guys!
Well the voting will be over soon.
Cant wait for next weeks battle of the bands
Keep up the good work Classic Rock Magazine !
Theres two choices here
Hippys on the Hill – New refreshing rock sound
Serpico – Accomplished/polished band who would fit straight onto Scuzz TV as most of the bands on their are all Blink 182/Sum 41 wannabes as well
Im so bored with the UK /USA & Japanese music scene…..we need to take it by the balls and re invent the new wave of rock….Hippys and fresh sounding bands like them have got to be be our future….Long live Rock n Roll
THESE DAYS YOU MAKE ME AWAY AND I AM ALWAYS INSANE BY THE END OF THE NIGHT BUT LET’S GO! X
Serpico FTW!
Not only do these guys sound amazing on record.
But I’ve seen them live a couple of times and they just sound AWESOME!
Not only that but the members are possibly the NICEST band guys I’ve EVER met! And believe I’ve met a fair few bands.
Hell Mikey even signed my copy of the Serpico EP!
LoveYouSerpico!
Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of Neon Wasteland!
