Battle Of The Bands: Attica Rage Vs Sons Of Merrick

terrybezer / Communication Breakdown, News / 15/05/2009 17:09pm

Ding-ding! Seconds out! Welcome to round six of our new war of the great unsigned!
The idea is simple: we’ll give you access to two unsigned bands. Download their songs and then vote for the band you like the most. The following Friday we’ll count the votes – and the winner will get a spot on a forthcoming Classic Rock magazine CD, taking their music to 70,000 rock fans.

Round Five was won by Magic Ship – watch out for a track from them on a forthcoming CR CD.

So without further ado, here’s this week’s contenders:

Attica Rage

Glasgow’s Attica Rage are “not about a scene, a fashion or a passing trend: it’s all about the riffs, the songs, the live shows and above all, pure unadulterated hard and heavy rock’n’roll! And beer.”

We’re liking their style, and we think you will too. If you have a fondness for rock with a healthy dose of punk attitude and the raw crunch of Motörhead or Black Label Society, then they’re well worth a spin.

The band haven’t stopped since their inception, and have shared festival bills all over the shop with everyone from Thin Lizzy to Ministry.

They’re fresh off the stage from the Metal Hammer-sponsored Hammerfest, but do they have what it takes to win a bout of CR’s Battle Of The Bands? Only YOU can decide, download their track First Life without delay.

Sons Of Merrick

Up against the Ragin’ Scots we have London’s very own Sons Of Merrick. They formed back in 2005, and CR’s sister mag Metal Hammer said that they “deal in huge great dirty slabs of southern rock with the lascivious swagger of Mötley Crüe and the true grit of Pantera”. And we reckon that’s a pretty spot-on assessment.

We have no idea who (or what!) Merrick is, but his offspring seem to be making a healthy ol’ racket, and they have been touring up and down the country with the likes of Orange Goblin, Pig Irön and many more.

They’ve just recorded their debut album Tight Nerves & Suavity, but do they have what it takes to win a bout of CR’s Battle Of The Bands? Only YOU can decide, download their track Striding The Valleys Of Skullamus right now!

Attica Rage are extremely good – as anyone who saw them at Hammerfest will agree

Tough one, but I think Attica Rage just about come out on top.

I saw The Sons of Merrick play at The Bitter End in Romford a week ago Saturday and they were fucking awesome!!!

They blew the headline act clean out the doors! Not only that but the first act was a ridiculously talented guitarist/ vocalist called Tommy Smith who jammed with them on their last song and it was incredible!! Brilliant live, saw dust on the floor rock ‘n’ roll!! They must get signed!!!

Great magazine by the way!

I had to choose Sons Of Merrick because, quite simply, you don’t get many bands with such raw vocals as their singer’s. They really are a live band to be savoured and cherished.
