Ask ELP

mdome / News / 05/02/2010 14:04pm

Got something you’ve always wanted to ask Emerson, Lake or Palmer? Or maybe all three? Now’s your chance.

As part of Classic Rock Presents Prog’s celebrations of ELP reuniting to perform at the inaugural Classic Rock High Voltage festival on July 24/25 in Victoria Park, we’re offering exclusive access to the three giants of the progressive rock world.

Just add your question in the comments section below and we’ll put them to the great men, the results to be published in a future issue of Classic Rock Presents Prog.

‘Love Beach’ is still cited as an all-time low, critically panned, and Carl’s ‘frisbee’ remark is well known.
But, Side 2 (in old vinyl terms) – ‘Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman’ is a personal favourite, and I think still stands up to this day. You could argue the song, and band, never get out of second gear but that’s part of the charm and mood of the piece imho.

So, question:
In retrospect, 30+ years on, do you collectively or individually have some warmth for any of that album, or still shiver in recollection?

Keith: when is your 2nd piano concerto and the symphonic Tarkus coming?

Greg: What is your vocal range? In Living sin you go from low C to high baritone A (C2-A4), great stuff!

Carl: Has your percussion concerto been performed by a symphony orchestra? It is about time!

Ilai Ashdot

What were the main influences for your longer pieces like Tarkus, Karn Evil 9, and Take A Pebble?

Alison Henderson

Which current prog rock bands do you think are -musically – the natural successors to the ELP legacy or the closest to it?

Paul Sager

I was wondering when the band could ever step up to the plate and create something as good as Tarkus or Brain Salad Surgery? With Progressive rock at an all time high, why don’t the originators to something edgy and OTT and quit with the sappy songs. Thanks, Paul

Will Emerson and Lake play any warm up shows in the U.K next month before they head off for the month long tour of the U.S.A.

Will Carl play any warm up shows in the U.K.with Asia before they head off to Europe and Japan.

Will Emerson do a tribute to “Brian Davison” with his old mate “Lee Jackson” this year or at the High Voltage Festival.

Old prog rock fan.

Do you all like big tits?

Linda Heath

After the orchestra left the 1997 Works tour in Des Moines, you travel to Fort Wayne, IN for a few days of relearning the material as a threesome. What are your recollections of those rehearsals and just how hard was it to perform Pirates with no orchestra?

BTW: losing “Closer to Believing” from the setlist was the worse thing to me about losing the orchestra.

John Coulson

Keith: Have you recovered from the repetitive strain injury to your hands that has affected you over the years, particularly recently when you had to cancel your tour with Mark Bonilla and the Ronnie Scotts club shows? do you have to take precautions?

ELP: What has prompted the re-union at this time? Why is it only for a on-off show, why not a longer tour and album?

Cray Morrison

i am with some of those here….I know you have the talent and ability to put out another prog album of the same ilk of Brain and Tarkus…I never understood the attempt at the same kind of success as Genesis in the pop music industry. Three ultra-talented musicians does mean sometimes ultra-ego, makes some sense. I mean, sincerely there are some of the best piano, bass, drum free-form music moments in music history within the time frame of say Take a Pebble, The Three Fates, Trilogy, Brain Part II, a lot of which has been totally unnoticed/underrated. Albeit, what I loved about ELP was that organic flow between that of classical and jazz phrases to that of pop and hard rock. What you attempted to do later, focus on that of pop rock elements and infuse lightly some classic elp just didnt’ work. I know the music industry is harsh, but hell, just write man, put up the songs for $.99, give us whatever you got. I hope you work things out and yeah, listen to me and do what i want you to do…lol….but seriously, doing what I want is very much aligned with those attracted to the ELP brand and way out albums like Brain Salad Surgery, Tarkus. I don’t want the 3-4 minute ELP…

Mr. Lake: Can you see yourself doing another album with Gary Moore?

John Wenlock-Smith

I’ve always wondered whether Keith would consider making an album with his fellow “Prog” keyboard Players – much like Joe Satriani’s G3 Project
Can you imagine – Keith Emerson + Rick Wakeman and Jon Lord (and Patrick Moraz / Dave Greenslade)
what a corker that would be or failing that how about an album of Collaborations with the likes of Jess Beck / Steve Vai / Slash etc
How about it guys

stoolie

Did you ever have to take a dump or even worse, shit yourself on stage?

Christine Bodi

What compostions are you most proud of either collectively or individually?
And what songs did you most enjoy performing live?

What classical piece would you like to give an ELP re-vamp?

Great to see you guys back together again. Please come to Philly, Pa. I’ll be out of town for the Emerson-Lake show in April, but so will Carl. Please come back and see us again with an ELP tour. Thanks for all of the tremendous shows at the Spectrum over the years.

David Sanderson

Silly question but are you aware that Jim Davidson is a massive fan and even includes some ELP songs in his live act?

Zachary Nathanson

Will there be more Deluxe Editions in the works including; Tarkus, Trilogy, and the self-titled debut?

rick kratz

how about a performance of (my favorite)-the complete Trilogy

Marcelo Rodriguez

Would you do a run of shows playing Tarkus from beginning to end?

Kittiwake

Why with your various musical backgrounds, did you settle on the musical style that originally brought you together, then digress further until it became more “pop” than “prog”?

Blokeski

Any chance of seeing Karn Evil 9 in its entirety at High Voltage. It may be your last shot at doing it again!

gazzagary

Please play “Toccatta” at the High Voltage Festival.

Carl plays this tune with his band and its just brilliant.

Can you play a small venue warm up gig for fans on this site?

Old prog rock fan.

steve fennell

How about holding a survey among Classsic Rock readers and letting the fans choose the set list?

Here is mine:

Abadon’s Bolero
Tocatta
Trilogy
From The Begining
Still You Turn Me On
Barbarian
Take A Pebble
Karn Evil 9 in its entirity

Fanfare For The Common Man
Pirates

Pictures At An Exhibition.

Rick Ray

Keith, Was wondering what your inspiration was for Karn Evil 9 (2nd Impression)?…always considered this one of the top musical pieces of all time.

Greg, you stated in Progression Magazine that you weren’t that fond of the Emerson, Lake & Powell album, was wondering why? When this album was released it didn’t leave my turntable or car stereo for a year and a half (can’t say that about any other musical piece)…this album was a huge inspiration on me musically…lately I’ve been learning the keyboard arrangement of ‘The Score’ on guitar, difficult transposition.

Carl, was wondering if you still had you very heavy steel drumset?

Rick Ray

Keith, you stated on EMPTY VEE one time (when E.L.Powell was on) that you weren’t a Beatle fan…I believe if it wasn’t for ‘Strawberry Fields’, I Am The Walrus’, ‘A Day In The Life’, ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’, ‘Benefit Of Mr. Kite’, etc…progressive rock wouldn’t exist, as the Beatles knocked that door open for ELP, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, etc…you gotta at least give the credit for changing rock music…???

mr sinky

hey guys, great to see your back together for this gig.
but dont do a zep on us please,we deserve
more. dont just do a greatest hits package
the bugger off back into oblivion.

a tour, new album-come on guys you do have
fans out there.

ritchie

After you guys play High Voltage, and feel that it was real fun and so on, would you consider touring again?
Thanks for your time
/Simon
