One of his former bandmates might in it, but Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell has slammed VH1’s reality TV series Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew.
Currently, the band’s original bassist Mike Starr is being followed by the show, as he battles against addiction at the Pasadena Recovery Centre. But that does not impress Cantrell.
Blabbermouth are reporting that the guitarist had this to say: “That particular show, I think it’s a real travesty and a shame to put people in a really vulnerable situation like that, and make it entertainment for people to see.”
It shouldn’t be forgotten that AIC vocalist Layne Staley died in 2002 from his drug addictions.

Jerry is the bands guitarist not bassist, that’s Mike Inez. /Alice in Chains fanboy
I agree.
Jerry Cantrell is the guitarist and also sings lead and co vocal on some tracks. He’s not the bassist.
rock on mike
You are all right.
It says “Currently, the band’s original bassist Mike Starr” and specifically says “Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell”.
Reading is a wonderful thing!
Its funny, I was just in a conversation about this show, and I couldn’t agree more with Jerry on his view about it. I understand at one point its good to see where addiction can take a person, but to use it as entertainment is BS. And as far as Mike Starr is concerned, I don’t see where putting him on TV during a 130mg Methadone Detox is going to do him or anyone else any good!!! I know for myself it was a devastating Detox, and I certainly wouldn’t want the world to watch me go through it. In fact, I had been on it for soooo long, and to try to come off it in a 30 day “spin-dry” was an absolute nightmare. And the last thing I wanted to do was go to a meeting to talk about it EVERYDAY!!! It takes a long time to pull yourself through that whole thing…meaning: mentally, spiritually, physically, emotionally, and so on!!! I could see eveything he was going through–from experience!!! All I can say is, Mike, PLEASE give yourself a break and give yourself some time away from the spot-light BRO!!!
Hi, I am not a big fan of reality tv, simply because some shows seem as though they are scripted…That doesn’t seem to be the case where “Celberity Rehab” is concerned..I think it’s VERY unfortunate Mike’s Ex-band members think the show is taking advantage of him. I believe Mike had a choice rather or not to have his rogress documented? If he didn’t have a choice then it is wrong for producers to force him into a documentary about his drug addiction. When I watch Mike it makes me want to cry because..I remember when I first start liking AIC i got my sisters to listening to them and the rest is history. Anyways, I feel bad for Mike. I know he often reflects on the “good ole days” at the height of his career . What he thought was a little fun or an experiment ended up lasting longer than a short time. I look back at the old videos and I know he thinks the same as I . “wow where did the time go?” I think Mike wants to add hope to peoples life. Losing a a band member to drugs had to be traumatic experience. I just hope he can get better.
I don’t want tto forget…Doug Hansen, Congratulations on your sobr
Sorry Doug…I meant to say Congratulations on your sobriety. Way to go Bro.
