After two years lugging the band’s gear around, it was at a 1972 show for a school prom that, having completed his duties setting up the band’s equipment, Powell sat down at the piano and began playing his own version of Free Bird. Suitably impressed, Skynyrd mainman and singer Ronnie Van Zant asked him to join the band.
Billy Powell was an ever-present behind the keyboards of Lynyrd Skynyrd from that day until the fateful plane crash of October 20, 1977, in which Powell suffered facial cuts so severe that reports claim his nose was almost severed from his face. He rejoined Skynyrd for their 1987 reunion, having spent the interim period playing for Christian rock band Vision.
He remained with Skynyrd until his untimely passing, which occurred as the band were in the middle of yet another successful US tour, having spent much of 2008 on the road with Kid Rock and Hank Williams Jr.
Although widely known as the premier Southern Rock band, it was often Powell’s deft touches that helped enhance the country and blues elements of the Lynyrd Skynyrd sound that made them so much more than just another hard rock act. Personable and friendly, Powell was, along with guitarist Gary Rossington, the last remaining member of the line-up that recorded the band’s legendary 1973 debut Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd. As long-time friend Hank Williams Jr. said, “I will truly miss Billy. We have all lost one of our best rowdy friends.”
