Video: RNDM release Hollow Girl
Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament says his new project RNDM, featuring Joseph Arthur and Richard Stuverud, is a deliberate attempt to get away from “bloated” albums.
The three-piece have released a live video of their track Hollow Girl – view it below.
Ament tells Spin: “I don’t have a great voice, or even a good voice. But Joe has a great voice, a really resonant tone and texture. I always want to hear those voices alone, like when Joe Strummer singer White Riot by himself. That’s the essence right there.
“We’ve all made records that were slightly bloated and had too much going on, maybe a little too much paint on the canvas. This is an opportunity to do something different.”
The band recorded two albums in just a few days after planning a simple jam session. Like many of the mainstays of their act, the name started out as a joke – the title Random Gong.
Arthur explains how he met a man who owned eight gongs. “I asked him, ‘Who needs more than one gong?’ He says, ‘Do you want to hear them?’ I said, ‘Sure,’ and he hit each one. It was amazing. I told these guys that story and someone said, ‘We should be Random Gong. A couple of days later Jeff said, ‘Maybe we should lose the gong.’”
RNDM just completed their first US tour.
