Video: Lou Reed’s last interview
Lou Reed’s final interview has been released in a video clip – view it below.
It was recorded on September 21, just five weeks before he passed away as a result of liver failure.
During the conversation he’s asked why he makes music, and replies: “I love it. You do what you love – or you get arrested.”
The piece was intended as a promo for Parrot Zik headphones, which Reed liked but felt could be improved. The manufacturer’s CEO, Henri Seydoux, travelled to New York to discuss the product with the Velvet Underground founder.
Reed’s friend Farida Khelfa, who was involved with shooting the video, explains: “Today I see Lou for the last time; I do not know this yet. Lou seems very diminished – but recovers quickly in front of the camera. This is the last time we have a conversation together.”
Following his death on October 27, Reed’s widow Laurie Anderson told how she’d taken him out of hospital after doctors admitted there was nothing more they could do, and that he passed away happily, performing tai chi.
