Green Day’s new album Uno! is now on sale – but it may feel like less of the “party on a record” they said it was after frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s onstage meltdown.
He’s now in rehab after the band admitted there was no reason behind his furious outburst other than his own addiction issues.
It means new video Stay the Night, below, might have felt more upbeat and throwaway if Armstrong hadn’t come close to throwing himself away.
Lyrics like “I got an impulse so impulsive that it burns” and “I’m just sick and tired of feeling so alone” sound different when, instead of thinking of them as the words of a young man trying to talk a love interest into bed, they’re regarded as cries for help from a 40-year-old struggling with substance abuse.
“Cure the circles round my eyes” certainly appears to mean something new after Armstrong’s behaviour in Las Vegas at the weekend.
Uno! is the first of three albums, with Dos! out in November and Tre! in January.
