Music: The Amorettes want you!
The Amorettes have set up a WeFund campaign to help finance the recording of their second album.
Track: The Amorettes – Hot And Heavy
File Under: sporran-quivering all-girl power trio
We’re big fans of The Amorettes, here at the CR website. This is what we had to say about their first album, Haulin’ Ass, released in 2010:
West Lothian wonderwomen The Amorettes sound like Rock Goddess fed on a diet of single malt and deep-fried Cornish McPasties. (In fact, the band thank ‘the good people of Ginsters’ on the album sleeve.)
Such is the spunky, stripped-down superlativeness of their debut, we confidently predict this lot are gonna make the biggest girl-group noise since The Nolans appeared on the cover of Sounds with Motörhead (see below).
Here we have 10 brilliantly breathless tracks, Gillian Montgomery leading the way with her high-pitched singing style and claymore-cleaving six-string tricks.
The songwriting is first-class and as concise as you like: three-minute-long chunks of hook-laden humour and hellion fury that melt on your tastebuds like haggis-flavoured Quavers.
Hot And Heavy is an endearingly naive anthem along the lines of the Goddess’s own Heavy Metal Rock’N’Roll.
Imagine having a fistful of chipped, black-nail-varnished talons raked viciously across your forehead. Well, Boxticker – with its mantra of ‘Boxticker! Boxticker! Don’t you wanna mess with me’ – provides a similar effect. (And dig the way they rhyme ‘castanet’ with ‘soaking wet’.)
Talk Nerdy To Me, meanwhile, is an invitation that’s impossible to resist. In fact, we’re on the phone to The Amorettes right now, discussing bus timetables, Hornby trainsets and Dr Who…
Oops… we just found a video for the song too:
