Music: Paperback Freud – Shakin’
Don’t ask me why, but we almost missed this one.
I was looking for some album or other, rifling through the CDs covering my desk, checking out the millions of YouTube and Soundcloud links sent to me every week, double-clicking on my download folder to see if it’d come via Haulix or MPE or Dropbox. And then I noticed it.
“What the name of Christ is Paperback Freud?” I asked myself. I loaded it into iTunes and was blown away. You will be too.
The PR – who, it turns out, did send a follow up email suggesting the band would be good for AOR magazine – described them like this: “…Swedes (pals of Soundtrack Of Our Lives and Graveyard) who kick out a stew of old rock riffs with a contemporary edge. Think AC/DC, Aerosmith and through some more laid back acoustic tracks the Stones, Faces, Led Zep, The Georgia Satellites, The Quireboys and Guns N Roses.”
It’s a fair description. Their name may suck a bit, but to these ears the Paperbacks (can we call ‘em that instead?) sound a lot less contrived than, say, Airbourne. Think Gluecifer street-fighting the Supersuckers, with Malcolm and Angus tossing both sides more ammo. Tougher than a knuckleduster – and with a video to make Charles Saatchi shake in his designer boots. Enjoy.
