Mustaine up for Metallica jam with Newsted
Dave Mustaine likes Jason Newsted’s suggestion that the pair should team up and perform early Metallica music on an upcoming tour.
Megadeth will hit the road with Newsted’s self-titled solo band as part of Gigantour 2013 in the US next month. The bassist recently said he’d be up for jamming a track by the band they were both previously part of. Mustaine was fired in 1983 and Newsted, who joined in 1986, quit in 2001.
Now the Megadeth mainman tells Grammy.com: “There’s a really cool new relationship between the two of us. I saw he said something about us playing a song together and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s pretty interesting. It’s doable, and I think it would be fun.’”
But he underlines that no agreement has been reached, particularly since has hasn’t discussed it with Megadeth bassist David Ellefson. “I’m not ruling anything in or out, because I’ve still got to talk with David. I want to make sure Dave and Jason talk and figure out how they’re going to do it if we play together.”
While Newsted suggested performing the track Phantom Lord, Mustaine says: “One thing that’s important is not to copy other people. It would be cool to do something really different instead of doing the same thing people expect – old songs.
“I think there’s a lot of potential; the talent is there. Jason and I go back the furthest so I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with him.”
Meanwhile, Newsted have released a new track, Heroic Dose, from their debut album Heavy Metal Music, to be released in August. Hear it below.
