Albums Of The Year So Far (pt.5): Featuring Rush, Shinedown, Storm Corrosion, H.E.A.T. and more…
3. Storm Corrosion – Storm Corrosion
We’d known for many years of this potential liaison between Steven Wilson and Mikael Åkerfeldt as it was raised in just about every interview conducted with Porcupine Tree and Opeth, also in dialogues with Mike Portnoy, the then-Dream Theater percussionist who was due to have been the third corner of its triangle.
In some ways, expectations were heightened when Steven and Mikael revealed that Portnoy was superfluous to their plans – in fact, save for some minimalist contributions from PT’s Gavin Harrison, no drumming of any sort was required!
The results are, frankly, gob-smacking. Storm Corrosion’s riffage-free 47 minutes are reminiscent of a creepily disturbing film soundtrack. For those brave enough, headphones and darkness are required to appreciate its full spellbinding beauty.
