Classic Rock Critics’ Top 50 Albums 2008: 3-1
Come on in to see what our critics made their album of the year.
3. Guns N’ Roses
Chinese Democracy
Geffen
It sounded better last year. Unfair? Maybe – but what the leaks couldn’t prepare you for was how much more overblown it’d seem in full-length form. Still: a monumental personal achievement for Axl, with half a dozen blistering epics.
2. Metallica
Death Magnetic
Mercury
Metallica needed to make a record that restored faith to their fan base – and Death Magnetic did exactly that. It’s dense, lengthy and unremittingly heavy. After St Anger, they sound like a band again: flawed and human, but united.
1. AC/DC
Black Ice
Columbia
This is the AC/DC we wanted to see return after eight years away. Granted, it’s not quite Back In Black; granted, it’s a trifle overlong… but if Acca Dacca’s 14th studio album proves to be their last, then they’ll be going out on one helluva high. There’s a sense of purpose to Black Ice that far outstrips its predecessor, Stiff Upper Lip: it’s louder and prouder; there’s more craft to it, stronger songs, catchier hooks. There may not be a Whole Lotta Rosie or even a Thunderstruck, but there are new classics in Rock And Roll Train, Anything Goes and slow burners that repay repeated listening: Rock And Roll Dream, Spoiling For A Fight, the ZZ-like Decibel, the Zep-ish Stormy May Day. If this is indeed the swansong for Angus, Malcolm, Brian, Cliff and Phil, it’ll have been an amazing ride.

wow youve got it bang on! its a superb album and its got some real ac/dc classics on there.stormy may day and rock n roll dream are as good as owt else theyve done.real ac/dc fans will tell you its a really varied album.
Chinese Democracy is hand’s down the best, the leaks were nothing like the finished tracks, truly mind blowing!, Motorizer was second best, then Nostredamus, then Death magnetic. Word to your mother!

i agree with metalica great album a joy to the ears
and the same with dc a stomping blues cd.
guns n roses not a fan of this album gave it a go but just couldn’t get on with it
I’ve just got hold of Frost*’s experiments in mass appeal, and i have to say that album blew me away, that’d be my personal favourite. I wasn’t too blown away by your top 3 when i listened to then (i feel they’re a bit samey and done before), but i can see where you’re coming from now, they’re growing on me strongly, especially Black Ice.
1. Airbourne: Runnin’ Wild
2008 Album Of The Year
2. Nostredamus
Nuff Said!
Though I agree with some of the choices listed throughout the top 50, I’m stunned by the exclusion of Cynic’s “Traced In Air”
That album is a masterpiece in the same league as “Mabool” and “Lift Yr. Skinny Fists”. How did it not get included?
