nowt wrong with thw MFM albums.
Of the northern bands I thought FIST were great and like Vardis a little.
Perhaps the NWOBHM was regional in some ways as being from Birmingham, the bands I really got into were Jameson Raid,Money,Cryer and Limelight

I liked Iron Maiden with Dianno and early def leppard but the appeal soon dwindled.

Ah the memories, Dundee Caird hall & that smell of the hall. The lights go down & the stalls being carried out by the bouncers. Iron maiden, Praying mantis & a local dundee band called Colliseum 11 on the metal for Muthas tour. Saving up sounds tokens for an album to arrive in the mail creased but playable.
I can also remember fist as a support for Gillan.
I also remeber a band called more who got pelted with fruit at Castle Donnington in 1981. Not their best gig!!!
Even after 30 years I still can't forget all that & glad I was there.
Having emigrated to Australia in 1982 it was like coming to a differant world as the scene here was just not the same.
I do like your choice of albums & the funny thing is I still have some of those albums. The even funier thing is my 11 year son is now into Saxon & maiden. I took him to see Iron maiden for his 10th birthday. It just goes to say that great music never dies & it spans the generations, it just gets better like an old Marshall, strat & les paul.
Bring back the walls of marshalls the long hair (even though mine is grey & falling out) the torn jeans, patches on the denim jackets.

Cool NWOBHM list! DiAnno created to Maiden and soon it was throw out in vile form. Without Paul there would not be Iron Maiden. Wild Cat is one of my favourites. Instead of Venom, Girl and Def Leppard would put to The Handsome Beasts - Beastiality, Ethel the Frog and Girlschool - Demolition. Angel Witch also. Cheers from Argentina.

Coor, brings it all back: patches, badges, denim, ice-cold rehearsal rooms, egos, desperate hair, lugging gear, aspirations, total arseholes, cider and more cider.
My proto-NWOBHM experience was as a young Alex Lifeson loving guitarist, who just wanted to play loud heavy rock, but ended up having to deal with a lot of people who just didn't get it. OK you can look back and say it was an incredibly fertile scene (and in some places I'm sure it was) but to be honest, up here in Dundee, there were really only about 2 or 3 bands at the most at the peak - this was flares central; punks hated rockers and both were hated by the skins and the mods. Long hair and leather? you were looked at like you were an alien! people crossed the road!
And forget about trying to find other musicians - it wasn't going to happen. I eventually ended up with a Geddy-loving bass player at the Uni, and that lasted about about 3 months and then fell apart. Ah . . golden days!
I think the Maiden album is probably the defining moment though - great album, and still sounds fresh today.

This is not a very good list.

'Wildcat' is weak and should never be put on any essential list while the much stronger 'Spellbound' and 'Crazy Nights' album are omitted.

Same goes for Samson - 'Survivors'. 'Head On' and 'Shock Tactics' are eons better, not the mention the utterly superb 'Before the Storm' with Nicky Moore on vocals.

Same gores for Saxon who made 3 much better album than their debut between 1980 and '82.

And where is the quintessential NWOBHM album, i.e. the self-titled Angel Witch debut?
